Remodeling your kitchen can be expensive, but it doesn't necessarily have to be. Perhaps you recently moved into a new home that needs a little facelift. Or maybe you're getting your home ready to sell. In either case, there are plenty of ways to transform the kitchen without emptying your wallet. Our real estate agents will share some of their top tips below.
- Replace the Backsplash
Replacing the backsplash can give your kitchen a whole new vibe. Look for a backsplash material that's quite different from your current one. For instance, if you currently have a plain white backsplash, consider replacing it with one made from patterned blue tile.
You can also change the format or size of the tile in your backsplash. If you currently have a small tile, replace it with a larger tile for a cleaner, more modern look.
- Paint the Cabinet Doors
Cabinet doors take up a lot of visual space in your kitchen, so changing their color can change your whole look. It's easiest to remove the doors first. Then, you can lay them down on a flat surface before painting them.
Make sure you clean your cabinet doors with a good degreasing agent before repainting them. Also, use an oil-based primer before applying your actual paint. This will help the paint adhere to the doors and resist chipping.
- Replace Your Cabinet Hardware
With a screwdriver and some new cabinet hardware, you can take a kitchen from outdated to in-style. This is an important update to make if you have intricately patterned metal, wrought iron, or painted hardware. Brushed nickel, polished chrome, and brass hardware are far more on-trend these days.
- Wallpaper Uneven Walls
If your home has older walls that are covered in a lot of dings or divots, consider covering those walls in wallpaper.
Modern wallpaper is so much better and more attractive than the kind you're used to seeing in outdated homes. It often has some texture and a simple pattern. You could even wallpaper just one wall as an accent.
- Add Some Pendant Lights
Many older kitchens lack lighting. You might have an overhead light, and that's it. Consider adding a few pendant lights to bring more light into the eye-level working area.
Good places for pendant lights include over your kitchen island and a few feet back from the main counter. Look for lights that coordinate with your kitchen's current hardware. For example, if you have nickel hardware, then nickel pendant lights will coordinate nicely.
- Install Some Shelving
Do you notice that items tend to accumulate on your counters and make your kitchen look overly crowded? If so, consider hanging some shelves on the walls.
A few open shelves next to your stove or fridge give you a convenient place to put your toaster, salt and pepper, cooking oil, and other often-used items. You won't know what to do with all the extra counter space!
- Create a Coffee Nook
If you enjoy coffee or even tea, consider creating a dedicated coffee nook in one corner of your kitchen. You can use a simple cart on wheels as you prep the surface. Add a few shelves, and purchase an electric kettle to keep in your cart, too.
If you display your coffee and coffee-making accessories on the shelves, they'll double as decor and add character to your kitchen space.
We hope these ideas serve you well as you update your kitchen. It's amazing what a difference a few little touches can make. Contact us if you're still looking for a new home. Our friendly agents will be happy to help.
