Furniture Tips

Are you feeling dissatisfied with your home? If it's starting to feel a little stale or like it doesn't meet your needs anymore, it could just be that it's time to rearrange your furniture. Changing your room arrangements can breathe new life into your home and remind you why you love it. Or if you're getting it ready to list, rearranging your furniture can help stage the space better for potential buyers. Here are a few tips from our real estate agents for a winning room arrangement.

  • Measure Before You Begin
Before you start moving your furniture, measure the room and your largest pieces. This will help you make sure you choose an arrangement that will actually work with the furniture and space you have available. If it appeals to you, you can even create a visual model of how it will look by drawing the layout to scale or using a room layout app.

  • Choose a Focal Point
If you walk through a few Belleville homes for sale, you'll start to notice that the best-staged rooms all have a focal point that the layout centers around. In your living room, this could be your TV or a fireplace (or both, if you mount the TV over the fireplace). The rest of the furniture arrangement should be chosen with this focal point in mind.

  • Choose the Placement of the Largest Pieces First
Even if you're playing with a room layout app and trying things several different ways before actually moving your furniture, always place the largest pieces first. This will allow you to find the best location for those pieces and fill in the rest of the space with easier-to-place small furniture and accent pieces.

  • Plan for Traffic Flow
As you are moving furniture around, either in reality or in an app, don't forget to plan for a logical flow of traffic through your home. Open spaces and freer walkways will help to make the rooms feel bigger. If you've gotten used to dodging around furniture, chances are your current layout is too crowded, so keep that in mind as you work on rearranging.

  • Get Rid of Anything That Doesn't Make You Feel Joy
Do you feel like you have a clutter problem that's preventing you from choosing a good layout or constricting the flow of traffic through your home? Do what the minimalists do and get rid of anything that you don't absolutely love. It's not worth trying to find space for something you feel only lukewarm about. Sell or donate what you don't want and free up your space so that you can enjoy it better.

  • Revamp Your Lighting
If your rooms aren't well lit, it might be a good time to rethink your lighting while you're moving furniture around. You should have several layers of lighting in every room: overall lighting, task lighting, and mood lighting. A mixture of overhead lighting, table lamps, floor lamps, and even wall sconces will achieve these layers. The idea is to have the room fully lit when you need good lighting, but to be able to reduce it to mood lighting when needed, such as when watching a movie.

Rearranging your furniture can go a long way toward making your home feel fresh again, but if you've truly just outgrown your space, it may be time to look for a new place. If this sounds like your situation, contact us today, and we'll help you get your search started.
