With so much to do after a big move, it's easy to overlook some smaller details. Things you'd never forget normally can slip through the cracks when you're celebrating – and resting up! – after moving into one of the great Belleville homes for sale.
Our REALTORS® strive to make every part of buying a home more comfortable, including the move. Many of our clients have reached out with stories of things they forgot to take care of, so we decided to delve deeper and find out what goes undone the most.
In the chaos of packing and unpacking, important administrative tasks can fall by the wayside. And the further you're moving, the more valuable it is to remember to do those things promptly.
Let's take a closer look at five things people forget to do after they move:
- Turn Utilities On (And Off) Before Moving Day
It may take up to two weeks to have electric and water service turned on at your new home, so contact utilities as soon as moving day is circled on the calendar. At the same time, be sure you notify existing utilities that you will be moving out. Service in your name must cease before new residents can move in and get everything under their own account.
- Change All the Locks at Your New Home
Your home is your biggest investment – and making sure it's safe is essential. The first and easiest thing you can do is change the locks at your new home within the first week. This should include both the front and back door. If the home has a built-in security system, get all existing codes from the seller, and contact the security company directly to transfer service. Be sure to do it before move-in day!
- Get Situated With Utility Panels and Smoke Detectors
Knowing the location of your breaker and water panels can be crucial in an emergency. Locate these right away and determine how to turn them off and on. If they are mislabeled or confusing, consider re-labeling them. At the same time, check all your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. It's a wise idea to replace their batteries. Ensure that you have a working fire extinguisher, too.
- Update Financial Records With Your New Address
Remember, every single account you have will need to be updated with your new address. Of course, insurance – including homeowner's, health, and life insurance – should come first. But don't neglect other accounts, such as credit cards or your favorite streaming service. Before you know it, companies could be sending your sensitive information to the wrong address!
- Walk Around the Home Exterior to Spot Safety Concerns
The odds are good you haven't spent much time at your new home after dark. As night falls, walk around outside to see if the lighting is sufficient. Test out outdoor light bulbs and replace any that don't work or aren't bright enough. In the morning, thoroughly inspect landscaping for anything that might cause falls or other accidents.
